How to Avoid Losing Quality Temp Workers

man chasing money illustration

Losing quality temp workers can end up costing your business a lot of time and money. When quality temp workers leave, all the time you spent training them leaves as well. After they’re gone, you’ll have to invest even more time training their replacements. Aside from the cost of all this extra training, you also need to think about what you’re spending on lost productivity. New temp workers won’t perform at the same level as fully-trained, experienced temps, making them less productive. And, while they’re getting up to speed, their questions and mistakes will be slowing down your other employees. The best way to avoid these costly disruptions is by avoiding the loss of quality temp workers in the first place. Here are a few tips to help you keep your quality temp workers for as long as you need them.

Keep the Lines Open

It’s hard to feel invested in a business if you spend most of your time in the dark. Communicate openly with your temp workers—give praise when it’s due, and don’t let rumors rule the break room. If changes are afoot, give your temps the same information you’d give your permanent employees. When your quality temp workers feel that you value their input, as well as their efforts, they’ll feel more connected to your company.

Push Their Limits

Many people who leave good jobs cite boredom and a lack of challenges as the main cause. If you’re hiring quality temp workers with critical skill sets, put those skills to the test. Quality workers want to push their limits and use their skills to the fullest. If you have a lot of highly skilled workers doing menial tasks, they probably won’t stick around for long.

Preferential Treatment

Managers used to adhere to the idea that you can’t do something for one employee unless you’re willing to do the same thing for all of your employees. You can forget about that idea. If your quality temps need some extra perks to keep them around, and you don’t mind granting them, go for it. Not only will it keep your quality temps around longer, it will give your other employees motivation to step up their game. There’s nothing wrong with reaping extra benefits for outstanding performance.

Inclusive Culture

This one comes up too often with temp workers. Many managers make the mistake of treating temp workers like easily replaceable products. Temp workers are people, and should be treated with dignity and respect in the workplace. If your quality temps feel like they’re being dumped on just because they’re temps, they’ll be looking for the exits in a hurry.

Performance Pay

Sometimes, it just comes down to money. Even a small bonus at the end of a large project can show your appreciation for a job well done. If your quality temp workers know that you appreciate their efforts, they’ll be more likely to keep up those efforts. It doesn’t necessarily have to be money, either. A personalized gift can show your appreciation and show that you take an interest in your employees’ lives. That kind of personalization can make your quality temp workers feel like part of the family.
